Ballpoint artists

Only a few people used ballpoints for artwork when ballpoints were first in public abundance. Among the first was David Oxtaby from the UK, and an Italian called Boetti. Although both used many mediums. Even today very few artists use ballpoints as their primary medium.

Below are links to a handful of artists who often work with ballpoint from around the world. A useful site to use, which lists many more ballpoint artists than are mentioned below which is 'a niche showcase of art & visual communication created using the humble biro', is: birography.co.uk/

UK biro artists

• Boo Saville uses biro to document human remains from archeological digs in some of her artworks, examples of her work here.
• Also another UK artist called Ian Robinson who uses biro in some of his works is at eenusart.com.
• A Brazilian artist, now based in the UK (i think), called Ethos does street art in biro (among other mediums) his link here.
• Susan Goodall uses ballpoints, her biro drawing gallery.
• Kelly Jackson, who is a London art student, has great control with biro. Some of her works can seen on Flickr here
• Philip Blackman is a british artist who works entirely in biro. He draws comics, his website is biro-art.com.

Rest of the world

• Of course can't leave out the Spanish artist Juan Francisco Casas, who seems to be doing very well. The drawing on the right here is a part of one of his. He seems to specialize in very large pieces and seems to have chosen to work exclusively in blue ballpoints. His website is located here.
• Another Spanish artist, who has used colour ballpoints for many years: Virginia Rodriguez.
• Australian artist Laith McGregor uses ballpoint in some of his works. Examples here.
• Australian artist Troy Archer does drawings in ballpoint biros. He sometimes mixes his ballpoint work with other mediums such as colour pencil (see left image). He even drew onto a sneaker with ballpoint for a store opening in Miami!

• There is a large US group of ballpoint artists who share and list their drawings on this site here. There are examples of colour ballpoint artwork on there. They don't all use biro specifically, and I haven't explored it much, but seems to be a lot of artists on there with work up.

All in all it does seem like ballpoint art is being taken up by more artists, and that the public is slowly accepting it along with the art industry as a whole, for more info on using ballpoints for artwork see the Ballpoint Art Info page.
